Gutvoid Reveal New Single “Umbriel’s Door” From Upcoming LP

Toronto progressive death metal quartet Gutvoid has shared “Umbriel’s Door,” the second track from their upcoming album, Liminal Shrines. The new record is scheduled for release on March 20 through Profound Lore Records.

Progressive Death Metal Roots

Formed by guitarists Daniel Bonofiglio and Brendan Dean, Gutvoid is completed by bassist Justin Boehm and drummer D. W. Lee. The group blends death metal and doom with songwriting foundations in progressive rock. Since their 2019 EP, Astral Bestiary, the band has moved toward more complex structures while keeping the aggression found on their 2022 debut, Durance Of Lightless Horizons.

Their second album, Liminal Shrines, serves as the first part of a two-piece concept. Across six tracks, the band explores cosmic horror themes and technicality. The album was recorded at Boxcar Sound Recording, Mount Wexler Studio, and Dystonic Sounds, with mixing and mastering handled by Greg Dawson at BWC Studios. The cover art was created by Kjell Åge Meland.

“‘Umbriel’s Door’ is one of the heavier and more eclectic tracks on Liminal Shrines, with different riffs, feels, and moods evolving and winding their way throughout. The lyrics are about a group of scientists who awaken from hypersleep to make first contact with an alien artifact, and we wanted the song to capture that narrative progression—it begins abruptly, like an awakening from an alarm going off, and eventually ends in an eerie transformative manner.” — Brendan Dean

Decibel Magazine Praises Gutvoid

The band has already caught the attention of Decibel Magazine, who noted that Gutvoid manages to keep the “metal first” without getting lost in technical gimmickry. The magazine highlighted the band’s idiosyncratic approach to soloing as a reason to pay attention.

Liminal Shrines will be available on LP, CD, and digital formats. You can pre-order the album via Profound Lore now. The band plans to record a sister album to this release in the coming months.
